Be thankful for what you've got

"If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, that will be enough." —Eckart Tolle

Is it too woo-woo? We wondered about that. But no matter what you believe or practice, this is the season of reflection. We say goodbye to one year and usher in the next. We can’t help but appraise our effect on the world, or proximity to our ideals, and our dreams and to-dos for our next spin around the sun.

If this is a holiday season for you, it bodes well to make space for gratitude no matter how you celebrate. To ritualize it, because this is how we, as imaginative humans, ingrain practice most fully. Especially in this hyper-ambitious pressure cooker of an era, and especially as agents of change.

Here’s what we’re thankful for, as 2019 goes to sleep and 2020 awakes:

  • The joy of shared work when good humour is central

  • The good juju of sharing creative space with people either trained or observant enough to recognize when we could use a boost (energy, air, renewal), and who know how to weave it into the work

  • Clients who recognize — and appreciate — when they don’t know all the answers, and who venture forward anyway

  • The talent and quick wit of our circle of Outsiders who contribute to experiences we make together

  • The magic we all make when we feel safe enough to let down our guard (at which point, we really start gain unexpected insights)

A concentrated pause for gratitude is the seeding of our most essential to-do lists. Gratitude isn’t just a matter of reflecting on the past. Being thankful is the emergent future. Being thankful galvanizes our purpose and our way of being. Remember when you felt at your best, this year? How can you repeat and extend on that feeling in 2020?

Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac
Gangster whitewalls TV antenna in the back
You may not have a car at all
But just remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall
Just be thankful for what you've got
Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac
Diamonds in the back, sunroof top, diggin' the scene
With the gasoline gangster whitewalls
TV antenna in the back

You may not have a car at all
But just remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall
Just be thankful for what you've got
Diamonds in the back, sunroof top, diggin' the scene
With the gasoline ooh ooh ooh
Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac
Gangster whitewalls TV antenna in the back
You may not have a car at all
But just remember brothers and sisters
You can still stand tall
Just be thankful for what you've got
Diamonds in the back, sunroof top, diggin the scene
With the gasoline
With the gasoline
With the gasoline
